Default 8.8 rear end

Just picked up some used 3.73 with about 3000 miles on them this might be a stupid Q but here goes will i have to still break the gears? Being that they are already used? For the install i would like to install they myself is there a backyard way to check back lash and if so how?

gears dont require a break in, you'll need a dial indicator to install gears correctly
