first off i take offense to the 5.0s not hitting 13.5s. On a stock engine basically, the 5.0 can run 12s with JUST suspension. So.........maybe he should buy any 5.0, throw a grand into suspension and then you can ask yourself why you didnt start with suspension.
I've gotta agree. Not to be insulting, but 13.5 is not hard to hit at all in a 5.0 and you can do it for relatively little cash. the newer cars are nice but they are extremely expensive to mod. Sure, you start out with more HP, but once you want to add more, it get's ugly.

I see people spensing $30,000, $40,000, $50,000= on new Mustangs and they can't touch a lot of the 5.0s with decent mods. I've got a $6,000 car with some extra money dumoped into mods. I still ahven't spent 1/3 of what they pay for the newer cars and they can't touch me on the strip.

I'd rather have three heavily modded 5.0s as opposed to one of the newer Mustangs. And the price would work out to be about the same.

Not with an AOD. Be lucky to run 14swith one of those. Stock of course. A manual should be able to run atleaast 13s with just gears andgood tires along with a little practice. But a good suspension does help.

i agree samseed, i've spent the same money on my 5.0 as my buddy has on his 99 GT and i've done some a number of changes and replacements on my stang to fix it up and try to make it fast while he has only bought....tires, x pipe, clutch, short throw, and gears.....and that about it. i love have the fox.....soooooooooooooooo much cheaper just look in a summit mag and that explains it all.

fordmuscle.com ran a 13.9 with their 88LX on cheap futura radials 3.55 gears, an exhaust, an old AOD with transgo kit, UL C/As and icing the intake and removing the belt, and that was their first run with that set up, put 410s and M/T E/T street on that ***** and itll be in the 13.7s, so basically an AOD 5.0 guy can go buy a decent condition one, perform the mods above, dial it in well, and outperform a stock 5 speed new edge which costs twice as much as what he spent.....not too bad huh

aod & aode's are awsome in my opionion due to consistancy. may not be able to dump the clutch at 5 grand but a transbrake will fix all that

You can go one step further and really tweak the tune. I did ai dyno pull in each gear to see exactly when that gear reached it's peak. I then used my Tweecer to adjust my shift points accordingly so that it always shifts at the perfect moment during the run.

Sure, you can do teh same thing with a standard and then just shift when you get to that point, but it's never going to be as accurate and consistant as something that's controlled by a computer.

its easy to get a fox to hit 13.5s.....

mine runs 14.2s heres my mods-o/r mid pipe, cat back, drag radials. thats its. stock gear and everything

if he gets a 5 speed, drops a gear in the car, say a 3.73, get a tire(i have m/t's) and simple cheap bolt ons=13.5

btw since the last time ive ran my car i put $300 worth of suspension work in my car, and expect a 13.9....
