Default What to do to prepare the 351

I'll be pickin it up in like a week or so. I'm planning to someday get it up to 450hp or so, but for right now I just wanna probably freshen it up, cam, intake, headers and drop it in. I talked to a shop to ask about getting bearings replaced.. Then the guy proceeded to tell me I don't know what I'm getting into and I should just bring it in for a full rebuild for 1800$ and he'd put new cam, timing chain and all that stuff in.

I was just plannin on maybe getting bearings done, maybe pistons and rings, then cam and intake and puttin it in. Should I just wait and not do any rebuilding till down the road when I will realistically be getting to those power goals? Should I for now just do my cam and what not, not else internal and run it for a year or so? The guy at the shop said they don't just put new bearings in old motors.

Any suggestions?

LIke I said, down the road a ways I'll prob set it up full roller, nice heads, all that good stuff, but for now I was just gonna do like a flat tappet, intake, headers and drop'r in there. I'm not sure of the mileage on the motor right now, I'm gonna hoepfully find that out tonight.

its a roller cam already, first of all.

secondly, it is a pretty decent job to re-bearing the bottom end, with the same crank. all sorts of measurements and whatnot, if you havn't done it, or don't have someone to show you, its gonna be a frightnight

i suggest you hold onto the motor, rebuild it along the way with fresh parts, maybe even stroke it, and when your done building it, drop it in.

Did not know it was a roller cam already, that makes me happy

2nd. I know it's a big job doin bearings, that's why I was gonna have a shop do it, because I know nothing about doing bearings. I don't have hte money now and won't for a long time to do full rebuild and stroker and what not..which is why I was just gonna do a basic deal with cam intake and headers and drop it in, have some fun with it for a year or so, get some heads, then eventually pull it and go all out on it.

I just talked to shop, and I'm gonna go talk to them in person maybe tomorrow to go over what it would cost me to have some rebuilding done like bearings and gettin it bored out, new pistons and rings and what not... get it nice and freshend up. so we'll see what I can come up with.
