Default What kind of filter is this?

I know this may seem like a dumb question, but I am a total newbie when it comes to engines. I always liked the foxbody mustangs and in February I finally got my hands on one. It's been in the shop getting the exterior dealt with (I'll have some before and after pics later), but now I'm ready to tackle this engine. The first thing I noticed when I opened the hood was this Air Filter. I know it's not stock, so what is it? What is this setup and what reason would the previous owner have for doing this? My guess would be to add more HP.

This is a air intake tube probably with a K&N air filter. This type is ok for more air on the inlet side but it will breathe in a lot of hot air from the engine bay plus alternator fan blade air flow. The preferred set-up is a cold air intake which basically puts the air filter in the federwell. Its just extra tubing to make it reach that point. In my opinion though the factory air box is sufficient with a k&n panel filter and the air snorkel removed. Unless you are making over 300hp at the wheels I dont think it makes much of difference to use a cold air intake that places the air filter in the fenderwell. Although my car has the air filter in the fenderwell.

Thanks.

I'll replace the entire setup with a Cold Air Intake. They're not expensive so why not?! [8D]

Forget the CAI, what you have is already better than stock...

There are other mods that you can be working on...like Gears!!

Thats one dirty engine bay you have there. Might want to clean it up a little bit. From the picture the filter looks pretty damn dirty to. Might want to try cleaning it and re oiling it or just replacing it.

Yeah that engine is a mess. I will be getting down in there and cleaning that up big time. I will be replacing that filter with a new one, I just don't know what size filter it is. A K&N Air filter runs about $40 and a CAI runs about the same...why not just get the CAI system?

I would get rid of that, it's probably causing wierd MAF readings and it's sucking in hot air.

Replacing the filters in your vehicle is crucial to its continued smooth operation. Inspect every 3 months, and change your air filter every 40 thousand KM. Anyone heard or have green air filter? I'm just wondering if i can try it.
