RE: what causes this
you shouldn't need to purchase a chip, just get a dyno tune. chips are junk.
anyway, you should be able to correct this problem without tuneing it. Did you do any fuel mods to accompany your H/C/I ?

you just refuse to be proven wrong, dont you. you can never accept when you are wrong. give me 20 minutes, i'm gonna collect the URL's of about 20 car forums with glowing red headers and a LEAN A/F

7.) Glowing headers mean the engine is lean – This wives’ tale is starting to lose steam, but still believed more often than not. Headers glow red for only one reason, there’s fuel burning inside. The two main reasons are a rich mixture and late ignition timing - which doesn’t give the fuel enough time to burn inside the combustion chamber. Test it for yourself, let your engine idle and crank the ignition timing back to the point where it barely runs, then get out the marshmallows.

well i guess the a/f ratio gauge was wrong it was pegged lean and as soon as we played with the timing it moved up richer and the headers stopped glowing

RE: what causes this
Headers only glow red from timing or extreme rich. Exhaust will glow red when cats are clogged and an extreme lean condition but it starts at the cats and works its way to the manifolds.

RE: what causes this
so obviously your saying i'm getting too much fuel and i have had the timing as much as 19* and still got red at #1 and #8 cylinder so moved it back to 14* same results so what do you guys suggest that i do the reason i ask about a chip is because a local mechanic said it will never get any better until i have someone customize a chip for me, what do you guys think. i'm ready to do anything its a brand new rebuilt motor with only 100 miles on it and i'm scared to drive it anymore until this is straightened out.
