Default How long and what equipment to change clutch?

My Clutch is starting to go. I'm curious what equipment is needed to do a clutch swap and how long it takes. Is this something that can be done up on jackstands? I was planning on waiting till I put my new motor in this summer, but if it's somethin I can get done over a weekend I might consider doin it.

you can do it on jackstands, but your not gonna be pleased working with that amount of space, especially if you've never done one.

basic tools are required. the only thing you might need to buy is a long extension, 3 feet usually, to get the bell housing bolts.
also a clutch alignment tool, but 99% of clutch kits include this tool.

Having just done a clutch on my 1988 I can tell you, mattdel was right on the jackstands, also don't even consider trying to put it in by yourself it just is too hard, a helper makes it possible. I did not have a helper so I picked the engine out and installed clutch and tranny then put it all back as one piece. If any of your friends has access to a lift, that would make it a much easier job...

if I had access to a lift and did it by myself, how long do you think it would take?

2-3 hours, assuming you have a tranny jack for use with that lift.

Long extensions are great, especially wobble extensions, so you can get at bolts from an angle. It can be done under your car, I do mine by myself in a few hours, and that's pulling a heavy toploader 4 speed out of a 67 Coupe. You really have to know what you're doing and have a system to do it by yourself, so if you've never done one I'd definately get a friend to help you out. If you have never done it, and have basic mechanical skills and can read you should be able to get in done in a day, certainly a weekend, with someone helping.
