1995 5.0 GT Performance Upgrade
I have a 1995 5.0 GT Mustang that I would like to increase in performance - horsepower, etc. maybe in the 250-300 hp range.
I was thinking I could upgrade the engine to Cobra specs. What is the difference between the two engines? Do you think this is a good way to go?
Or should I look at putting in a high performance chip? Does a Turbocharger make sense? High performance cam? What would you do?
Thanks,
Ron

upgrading the motor to cobra specs would help power but it wont get you to that 300 hp mark, i would personally build a new motor with upgraded heads, cam, and U&L intake. THen swap out the computer with a 93 one since the 94-95 computers dont like mods as much as the older computers

GT40 heads, maybee matched with a combo is a pretty good way to go IMO. From what I know the GT40P heads (very similar to the GT40 except for the revised spark plug angle) make very good power. In an article in the December '99 issue of 5.0 Mustang Magazine they did a before and after comparison dyno chart on an 86 GT. At peak RPMs (5500) the heads made 55hp over stock. Throughout the the entire rpm range they made no less than 20hp. It only got better as the rpms grew. Of course these numbers are going to vary with different cars and different mods. From what I see he didn't have anything to extensive done. But it should give you a good basis as to what these heads are capable of. And they are certainly more inexpensive than other heads on the market.
Personally I would go the supercharger route. There are a wide variety of chargers for our cars ranging from 1000 - 4000. Mileage shouldn't be too much of a problem if your car is properly tuned and you don't run an excessive amount of boost. For example, my friend runs 11lbs off his powerdyne unit on his '93 and has 120k miiles now. He's been running his charger for a few years now and hasn't had any problems. My car has roughly 100k on it and I plan on running a vortech or KB unit next year.
Good luck!

Aside from the outside cosmetic items like fenders and such. You will definatley need a new radiator support. Underneath the driver's fender would need to be structurally repaired. From the looks of it it could need possible suspension work. If your a really good bodyman it wouldn't be too hard of a project. But if you aren't very good at bodywork etc... expect to spend a lot of cash for paint, body repair, and replacement parts. For $2500 and the work going into it... it seems to me it'd be pretty close to what it would cost for a good condition one just like it. Not to mention the work you'll put into it. For the money your looking to spend when you say you want to fix a mustang up, does it necessarily have to have collision damage? You can find plenty of good deals on perfectly intact cars.
