Help with 5.0 Ident
My sons and I are gonna put a 5.0 EFI motor inour 70 Fastback. We bought a motor for $600 but the seller knew very little about it other than it was new. I posted some questions earlier in the general tech forum and they suggested taking the intake off and looking if it had roller lifters. I was able to figure out the casting number is F1SE. I removed the Intake and took a bunch of pics. Too much to post here so I made a page. Looks like a roller. There was also some tags with dates, can y'all help me decode them? I apologize but the pictures take awhile to download.

Why did they put that yellow stuff on the Ditrib. gear? Also, Can anyone tell me about the heads?
And finally, what should I do to the motor (for performance) before installing?
I realize this is a lot of questions and I really appreciate the help. Thanks a bunch!

RE: Help with 5.0 Ident
the block was cast in 1991, its a roller without the spider installed (holds the lifter dogbones down) heads are garbage. maxout arond 260hp. if you were to carb that engine and swap the heads it would make nearly 400hp. the mustangs ran a pretty wicked cam as far as stock goes. it was origionally a 351w marine/ offshore cam. thats why these 302's use a 351w firing order and not a 302 firing order.

im not saying you should go carb over efi, im saying its easy to make big power out of a 302 with minor mods.
i would say if you are planning on running the factory 5.0 fuel injection setup its a waist of time. as a minimum you should change the heads, intake, injectors, throttlebody, mass air, and ignition. 225hp is not very much and not an improvment over the 302 that came in the 70's.
carbing is depinatly cheaper. you can get a good intake and carb for what a fulie intake is going to cost you ($609). figure in the $300 for injectors, $160 for the mass air meter to run the new injectors, $140 for the throttle body, $75 for thefuel regulator, $135 for the higher volume fuel pump you need. thats just the tip of the iceberg.
$800 more for fuel injection to make the same power the carb setup costs. going carb wont be cheap by any means, its over $800 cheaper to do it though. as long as a carb car has fuel, air, compression, and spark it will run. efi plays by a whole different set of rules.
