How do you check for CEL codes?

How do you check for CEL codes?
Ok guys, I'm gonna sound like a complete noob for asking this question, but for some reason I can't remember how to check for engine codes when you have a check engine light. I remember that you have to jump a connector near the master cylinder, just don't remember exactly how. Anyone care to refresh me?
I'm having problems getting my '92 5.0 to start -- it just cranks and nothing happens at all. I'm thinking a part finally went bad and I'm pretty sure it has to do with air or temperature in some way. I just want to check and see if there's a code before going any further.

RE: How do you check for CEL codes?
with my mazda it 10 and GRND
might be some other pin though
but this would be more easily done
with a 1500 dollar code reader.
I believe you can still use a multimeter
to do the task.
which duraspark system do you have?
I II III ?????
to start off with you have to have the ignition turned
on.
if its duraspark I you will need to buy a resistor
to test the system. You will damage the coil.
and module if you do not use a resistor between
the positive lead on the ignition coil, and the batt
terminal. (motorcraft part no DY-36)(Ballast resistor)
resistor gets really hot during testing
release batt terminal lead from coil by inserting a paper
clip in the horseshoe coil connector, until the connector
comes free.
insert ballast resistor between batt lead of coil and
paper clip.
using a pin pierce both the red and white leads of the
module to short these together. This will bypass the
internal connections of the module which turn off the
ignition curcuit when the engine is not running.
with ballast resistor and bypass in place proceed with
duraspark II procedure.
NOW READ THE MANUAL.
OR SOMEONE SCAN IT IN FOR HIM
I AINT GONNA TYPE IT IN.
