ways to identify a motor
i just bought a motor froma guy that works at my shop, its a 1985 mustang GT motor. it has cast valve covers that say "powered by ford" on them and they are the original ones for that engine. the guy said that it was a very fast mustang before it hit the pole . its a carb motor and has a serp acc. drive setup on it.any ideas as to what it is and or where to find soem #'s? i am a small block chevy guy by heart, i just cant seem to ignore these cars.

Well if it's the stock motor and it's a V8, then it's a 302. But being so old it might be bored out, might be stroked, not sure if there's any way you could tell without taking it apart.

Oh. You could also get a shop manual and look at the engine casting numbers stamped on it. Don't know where it is on Ford engines, but on older smallblock Chrysler (318/360) it's on the left front just underneath the head, and on slightly newer ones it's on (iirc) the left side down in the center by the oil pan somewhere. My buddy just bought a '73 power wagon and the VIN said it had a 360, but the block said it had a 318.

should say 302 in the lifter valley , if you have the pan off and its a stock crank it will have 2m stamped on it , and it should say 302 on the underside of the head by the intake runners. the first one being your easiest , </P>
