yes, you can. Dont listen to people that say you should run a 9 inch. You can build a 8.8 to handle LOADS of abuse. I have a buddy that runs 10's on a turbo 310, with an 8.8" rear in a full weight SN-95 GT.

Depending on what exactly you wanna do with the car will dictate what you should put in it. If your doing track ONLY... 33 spline axles, and a full spool. You'll NEVER break that!

Myself, I'm running 31 spline moser axles, 3.73 gears, Ford T-lok (you should get something like an Auburn pro) I'm setting my car up mainly for street, So I need the flexability of the T-lok system for smooth operation on the streets
