Take the dash apart and check the tensioning spring on the needle. Sounds like somebody took the needle off (to install some different faces on the guages?) and didn't put it back on right. I don't know what the proper spec is, but you can add and remove tension until it reads correctly. Or take it to the dealer and pay to have them fix it.

Who does this? Dealers only? Tranny shops? Mine bounces, but not as bad as it used to.

A related question: how would I go about converting my 85 mph speedo to a 140 mph speedo?

You buy the instrument cluster from a newer mustang.

having the same trouble it seems to be related to the speedometer cable being bent at the end from normal wear (it comes into the guage a little out of straight), and some wear on the speedometer itself. I took the speedometer apart and it looks like the spin part with the magnet in it is rubbing against the cup part possibly because of worn bushings. New speedos from dealer are like $395 (scary)is there any other source?

I'm going with a new cable first

Buy online and I'm pretty sure you can do it yourself. If not take it to a tranny shop and slap it on for a hundred bucks in labor (give or take)

Id try calibrating myself first tho...
