high idle

RE: high idle
if i hold it at 2000 rpm when i let go it will stay at 2000 rpm for about two seconds before dropping to about 1200 rpm. i am going to test the ECT sensor in the morning but i still think that there might be something else. i dunno...

RE: high idle
The EGR, if stuck open will caus ethe idle to be rough and lower, not higher.
It seems to me that all the older ford efi systems will "kick down" off their high cold ifle if you blip or hit the throttle right after cold start up.

RE: high idle
the ECT sensor checked out ok so i am back to the drawing board. i still think that it could be either the EGR or TPS. the EEC test detercted the egr but when i took it off it was clean and with the aid of a screwdriver i could move the valve up and down with relative ease. should it be that easy? it is also possible that the EVR solenoid is not engaging the EGR but that shouldnt effect the idle at start up right? so even though the TPS checked out ok with resistance and voltage, the moving idle still has me doubting. at this point i have no idea what to try or what to check next. any suggestions?

RE: high idle
pull and clean the idle air control IAC on the side of the throttle body. this is what controls the idle speed when the throttle is closed and it sounds like yours is sticking some because it's dirty. use some carb cleaner on it and also clean out the inside of the throttle body around the throttle plate too to make sure the carbon buildup isn't making the blade stick slightly open also.

from what you've said and done so far and the headers glowing red i'll bet ya got a vac leak somewhere...thats why it idles high and the headers glow red from it running lean.....look for a vac leak....Len

I tend to agree... but if its jacking up the idle that much I'd think it'd have to be a pretty good size leak which I'd think you could hear really easily......elilly you said you checked for vacuum leaks right? how did you check for them?

while motor is running, shot the whole intake area and vaccume lines with some carb cleaner, see if idle changes in any spots... also a unlit propane tourche works great

word... I was curious if that is what he used rather than just listening for them
