Default T-5 to Tremec 3550

friend is selling a tremec 3550 with 5k miles for 500 or so. I still have the stock T-5 and I have been trying to find a tranny for the 306 thats going in next week. Someone told me this tranny came out of box trucks so the gearing is all different and acceleration is slow, has anyone had any experience with the 3550 in a mustang and is it better than a T-5? I know it had been upgraded to a TKO later on but what is the difference between them?

3550 is fine trans.
TKO's that replaced had gears made out of stronger alloy
Much better than a T-5

You will probably need a new bell, d/s and have to cut and move the x-member.
My TKO600 dropped right in with right bell and swap xmember for $100

i have a 3550 in mine, great trans, shifts great, i dont know what swap parts you need since mine came w/ the car, but im pretty sure you need a bellhousing at the least, mine has the stock driveshaft in it, i heard you can get away w/ this but the front of the shaft does not go into the trans all the way, i know this is bad im working on it but it works, i think you can buy a spacer that bolts between the rear driveshaft flange and pinion flange to fix that.

250 or a reasonable offer is fine. 2nd gear synchro is almost gone.

Good tranny and $500 is a great deal if it's in great shape. You'll need a new bell housing, shifter, clutch kit (26-spline instead of 10, IIRC), and (like r.barn said) x-member and possibly driveshaft. Start looking on Ebay and save yourself some $.
