Default Tranny Trouble

1990 LX 5.0

Just bought the car a week ago. Has Stock Tranny and its not shifting very smoothly. Also when sitting still and i go to throw it in reverse the gears grind out. To avoid that terrible noise and grinding i have to throw it back hard into reverse. My clutch pedel is very stiff as well. Whats going on? Clutch problem or tranny problem, or both?

Thanks

Try putting it in 5th before reverse, I have to do that to avoid grinding

you have to go from 5th to reverse, reverse isnt synchronized in a t-5 tranny.

almost all t-5's tranny's you have to go 5th to reverse.. and if its your first 5.0 then you should know the clutch isnt gonna be like a civic.. everyone i have every owned or driven has had a very stiff clutch pedal

I haven't had a T-5 apart in a long time, but most manual transmissions have straight cut gears for reverse and its common for them to grind a little, but not much. Does it grind going into first gear from a dead stop also? If so, you need to check your clutch to make sure it is fully disengaged. If the clutch is not fully disengaged, it causes grinding of gears becuase its still dragging the input shaft of the transmission with the motor. The heavy pedal is caused from the design of it being a cable operated clutch (which is a good thing). Many other ford vehicles had a hydraulic clutch. This makes for a nice clutch pedal feel, but very prone to failure, especially the slave.

to make you clutch less stiff you have to remove the clutch cable and lube it up real good. Had same problem. Also make sure it is routed as straight as possible
