IIRC Ford labelled it a 4.9L on the window sticker for older 302-powered Explorers. But 5.0 sounds cooler for the muscle car.

It also makes it sound like there's less of a difference between the 302 and 350 (five dot oh versus five dot seven, instead of four dot nine. Yay, .1L difference, but the way it sounds makes it seem bigger)

225hp. Ford didn't change it til '93, and they explained it as a different way of measuring the hp. I think it was the hypereutectic pistons they installed in '93.

I used to keep my dirt car at by friends garage. His name is Charlie Rapposa, been in racing for years. His car was an '87 t-bird chassis with an '88 snap on aluminum body, running a 300 six. Holley 4, headers (one for the front three, one for the back three), big cam, msd ignition, etc. He put the hurt on a lot of chevelles and camaros with that car, talk about torque.

It was the pistons, and the factory rated the engine at 205hp in 1993, to make the 1994 GT look better considering it contained 10 less hp than the 87-92's.<edited><editID>92GT</editID><editDate>37864.4661342593</editDate></edited>

the mstang has no 4.9 straight six!!!???? the mustang has 225hp from 87-92 and 93 was advertised as 205 even thought ford made no changes. the 87 88s had a few more hp because in 89 they changed the cam and speed density is less restrictive</P>

If you read about the history, the downrated 205 in '93 was a gradual process beginning around 88-89. Most of the years that are advertised as 225 are not really 225. Not that they are any less, but Ford never changed the rating. And like it was said before, in '93 they changed the way they measured the horsepower.
