I would suggest the Comp Cams 280 cam, put it in my first rebuild, it has .512 lift so works nice with stock equiment and has a super lope at 900 RPM and make real good power up to the 5800 range and is low cost, then later move up to heads and so on........Hey also I have a nice 292 cam with lifters new that i'ld sell for $150 still in the box, has like 494 lift, real good torque and horse in the 1200 to 56000 range and is an easy bolt in.

I ran a Summit cam in an engine years ago that chopped like Nascar. I ran it on stock heads, with stock springs. I think the advertised duration was .286 and the lift was only like .471. I was running a carbed set up. That cam was a hydraulic flat tappet. Shook the body panels of my old 4 eye at the red lights idling about 900 rpm's.
That's a bad idea, the stock springs are not even enough to handle a stock cam. Always upgrade springs when doing a cam. A big cam in an otherwise stock motor will have you seeing Honda Civic taillights.

I have to agree with JD on this one. Stock worn out springs are ****ty, you will definentally need to upgrade your springs when/if you do a cam. Why not shell out the $$$ for a set of GT40 or GT40P's. It's going to cost you about the same. For the record, here's a clip with my TFS1 cam and some other mods.

I've got everything except a set of nice heads (still rockin' the E7's [:'(]), but that will change this month. Between gaskets, cam, springs, lifters, etc. etc. I think it was around 450 dollars. It can be done for slightly cheaper though. Honestly I'd do a set of heads.
