ANYONE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH 331 LUBRICATION

RE: ANYONE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH 331 LUBRICATION
yo the piston slap in his motor is probably normal as long as it goes away when it warms up. It is typical of a high performance motor. I would never buy a complete motor from someone and just slap it in without pulling it apart first and measuring it myself. Even machine shops **** up all the time. The only person you can trust is yourself

You are exactly right rcdblink716. Forged pistons are going to make some noise when you crank them up cold. They should all be uniformed in their noise, one piston shouldn't be any louderthan another.

Damn.....everybodys ******* on DSS.I run a 331 from them,no problems.
Did u break in the motor,or dogged it the first day.Plus what weight oil are you breaking it in with.Should be a lite oil during break in.

dss said to break in with the shell rotella, and change after half hour, then run 100 miles then change again, then change every thousand miles after that!I think i'm just going to run stock volume pump and see what happens because I had a little low oil pressure when it was warmed up(52psi max at wot at 6200rpms)

i think its rediculous to expect to have to rebuild a crate motor. if they arent going to stand behind what they build they shouldnt be assembling it in the first place - they should be selling kits. why are you going to pay for the guy building it, the rings, the bearings, the gasket set they used, etc etc and then have to buy some if not all of it over again. not to mention what happens if you NEED to have the block honed more or the crank touched up? your paying for machine work twice.
thats the worst deal i have EVER heard of [:'(]

Sorry to hear about your problem. If you are going/did tear it down, mic the pistons and cylinders! We just went through a customer's 5.4L that DSS did. We had one piston that was a good 4thou to small.
Now, as far as piston slap goes in general....it depends on the composition of the materials used to make the piston AND what the manufacturer calls for piston to wall clearance! For example, JE requires a good amount of p to w clearance.....hence slap when cold. We use Probe pistons that allow a tight clearance...on average 2.5thou. We have never had a problem with the Probes!
Oil pumps....The 302/351s have a good oiling system. There is no need to run a high volume pump in them. Just use a quality replacement like a Melling.

How is your oil pressure? the stock pan should be fine with your high volume pump. You should always run a hv oil pump in a high performance engine the extra horse you give up is worth longer engine life. I say if your press is good run it cause oil press has a lot to do with bearing clearances.
