dbeck I was about to say something about a leak at the EGR valve area but you beat me to it. When I took my EGR valve off mine, I plugged the passageways in the upper intake with some marine epoxy compound backed up with some steel wool to keep the heat out of the manifold to keep things inside cooler. I also cut a plate to fit over where the valve used to be and sealed underneath it with some RTV also just to make sure it couldn't be a source of vacuum leaking. and just for grins, I took the EGR valve apart to see how it worked and all, the took the top part with the electical connection on it off and plugged it back into the wiring harness and tied it up out of the way and my engine idles and runs just fine without it. if you still want to take the valve off, this is what I would do to do it.
