The explorer motor has different pistons giving it only 9:1 compression with the 58cc chamber GT40P heads. The pistons are also hypertechnic not forged like the 5.0HO pistons.

The pistons aren't what changes the compression...the heads have smaller chambers. The pistons are the same hyper pistons used in 93+ stangs.

or is that too difficult?

RE: explorer block...
If the pistons were not different then dont you think that just maybe that the compression would be higher than 8.8:1-9:1 with a 58cc chamber on explorer block?? think about it... If you were to take a 58cc head and put it on 5.0HO block you would have around 9.5:1 ratio. Pistons have to be different

Excuse you??? Did you ever think that maybe the pistons in the exploder motors had a larger dish for better quench??? thus reducing the compression ratio?
or is that too difficult?

ovalracer, that's something I hadn't thought about...thanks for the correct (and detailed) explanation.
