Default Heads off blown engine

I found a guy with an engin that threw a rod, would the heads still be usable? its a ford explorer with the gt-40 heads and the upper and lower intake?

I think it probably depends on the circumstances behind the thrown rod. If lack of lubrication or excessive heat are the reasons for the blown engine, then the heads are probably damaged to some degree. Also, any loose fragements bouncing around in the combustion chamber at the time of the thrown rod could have damaged the head and valves.

even if the piston hit the head and its chewed a little that doesnt mean the head is bad. check em out and you'll know

probably can have them milled, as long as there is no valve damage and no damage to where the head gasket goes, i got a set of gt-40 that had the same thing, just had them milled ans the damage area wasn't a factor, most of the metal was from the piston just cleaned it up-got lucky

very rare when a esspoded piston or a dropped valve hurts the sealing area since thats squeezed between the block/gasket/head
