Default maching questions.

well i am going to cal; the machine shop tomorrow how much do you think this wil run?

fill the block half way
main girdle
deburr it
bore 30 over
clean it up in general (hot tank)
Arp main studs

and then i will also get an engine bag or could i just use some garbage bags? the reason i said that is cause i want to build right and it will take a while to save that kind of money

filling the block consists of filling the coolant passages
even half-way, your going to have overheating problems.

rather than pay the machine shop to do all that crap, why not buy a good block with the bore and stuff already done?
filling the block should be a LAST resort

you generally dont have problems when you fill the block to the bottom of the freeze plugs. very little material (modified concrete) is added.

first you tank it, than clean and fill it. than you bore it so you dont get out of round. its alot of monkeying around.
are you supplying the parts?
keep in mind the machine show will mic the bore and crank, than tell you what amount of boring needs to be done. you than have to order the parts. no machine shop worth anything will bore a block without the pistons in hand. usually the piston is undersized and final clearances are base on the actual pistons.

hottank is usually $20-$45
boring is $8-$12 a cylinder (more if torque plate is used)
install cam bearing and freeze plugs $75 + parts
deburing and other mis labor is usually done per hour basis. i have no idea what they charge around there, up here is around $150/hr
cranks are $85-$185

its not oncommon to spend 300-400 on a block in a real hurry for only basic things.

It's not bad to only fill it alittle bit. The problem with the 5.0 blocks is that they split at the lifter valley not at he bootom end. The block fill might help some but it might not.

jasper, the only thing you need the shop for is the hot tank / boring / cam bearing install. you can debur and fill yourself. if your going to use the concrete take everyones advice and use very little. to be perfectly honest you probably shouldnt even do it. yes, you WILL need pistons in hand before getting it bored. you also should be getting the block decked.

your gameplan is flawed [8D]

its a 351 roller block

my77stang set me in the right direction then.

so i will wait on the boring until i at least have the rotating assembly. why is filling it so bad?
