Exhaust trouble
I am in a panic, rushing to get all the work done to my car to get it to the paintshop- (87GT 5spd) supposed to be next weekend. Here's my dilemma: I have new Summit Chrome shorty headers and a BBK 2.5" Off road X-Pipe. They dont go together. WTF? From what I have read on the net, guys are mix-matching headers/exhaust parts all the time. Headers slid in place perfectly. The downtubes of the exhaust pipes are so hard against the body I can't bolt the flanges together. I tried using bolts instead of studs (smaller size) to try and get more movement, and when I did get the pipe to the header, the pipe was so tight against the body I couldnt even begin to roll the pipe into the right position. Are these headers my problem?Appreciate any input. Oh I am switching over from a butchered stock exhaust system. Thanks.

RE: Exhaust trouble
Well, they are some knock off no name headers. I have BBK's on mine w/ no issues. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. You can try putting your stock h-pipe back on to see if it fits or not. That will tell ya which new part is the problem. Maybe your new h-pipe is bent wrong.

RE: Exhaust trouble
We justput a Mac OR H pipe in a few hours ago and it was a PITA getting everything lined up and bolted in. We got it eventually. You just have to keep at it. The stock manifolds were on it.
(Not on mine... mine is staying stock )

RE: Exhaust trouble
Ive got a BBK H-pipe and stock headers. Had to spread the H-pipe maybe 1/4" to get the headers to bolt up. Was a pain being by myself but i got it together.
Have to wonder if the exhaust hanger under the tranny is bent somehow. Maybe its upside down? You could try heating the pipes to bend them a bit so they fit. Dont overdo it tho or youll burn thru. Sometimes you have to do a little tweaking so things fit.
Hows the fit between the H-pipe and the pipe to the mufflers?

RE: Exhaust trouble
On my 91 I had BBK shorty headers, Hedman O/R H-pipe, and Flowmaster cat back... If that's not mis-matching, then I don't know what is. They should bolt up no problem. Someone has a set of the Summit brand headers on this forum, and he says that they fit just fine. So I don't think its the headers.

RE: Exhaust trouble
My BBK pipe is the one that the downtube pipes from the header are seperate from the rest of the X-pipe, that being said I haven't got the X-piece on the car yet. I have a friend coming over after work today to have a look at what's going on, and he also feels, mixmatching shouldn't be an issue as he has Ford racing headers on his 91 with another brand of X-pipe. Just by eye last night I held the stock header parallel to the newly bolted in header and it looked about right. I will play around a bit with it tonight and see what I can come up with, I can't see it not working. Thanks for all the replies.

RE: Exhaust trouble
my bbk OR xpipe was in 3 pieces so everything could be adjusted to fit mismatching exhaust and headers, my exhaust wouldnt line up right with the mufflers do to the gt body kit bumper so i just dumped it after the mufflers, but i have pypes headers and they lined up pretty good but like i said my xpipe was in 3 pieces and easily adjusted

RE: Exhaust trouble
I just recently put Summit Chrome shortys on my stang and I had the same problem your describing. I couldn't figure it out so I drove it over to my mechanic and he said that my collecters were only 21/4" and I needed them to be 21/2 "He then replaced them and now they fit fine. I used a jack to get the collecter as close to the headers as I could when I was working on my headers
