What is the best way to race a 91 mustang lx 5.0, automatic. Is is better to race in overdrive, drive, or work from 1st gear, then to drive, then to overdrive??

you can start in 1st then shift to drive if you want but it isnt going to be much if any better than raceing in drive. dont use overdrive that will make it slower.

power brake, but be careful not to break em loose. just hold the footbrake down as far as it will go and rev with the petal. just like revving on a standard, but if u dont got a tach it will be all guesswork and i dont reccomend it for a launch

Ive found that if when you are racing you can put it in first and then when you want to put it in second quickly move the shifter to drive and then back to first. This will lock the tranny in second gear

most of the 5.0 autos react very well to power braking to 1800-2000 rpms.. od off, the gate on the stock auto don't lock on the way, and without a shift kit aren't going to catch well. one thing they do react well to is finding the shift points of the car under wot. drop the hammer and at the top of your rev curve let of the gas, and slam it back down .. once you know the shift points, you will be able to time it and catch the gears crisply. best advice get a shift kit and a ratchet style shifter... then look out... </P>
