Default main bearings

I have for a long time been looking for a decent mustang in my area(not many to be found) well I found a 94' cobra that has some modifications already done to it, but the man said it had a main bearing going out, and you can hear it especially at start up and high rev.....I want to know if it would be worth it to buy this cobra or just keep on looking...and if you could give me rough estimates on how much you think it would cost to fix something like tha on the 302 motor.....thxs...I am a noob at the motor stuff

Well, it is hard to say. It depends on a lot of things. 1 is where you are located. Just to change a main seal for me it would cost 600$ at a shop, where I did it for a friend in 3 hours, and I didn't charge him. Try calling a shop in your area, thats a first step.

well I have called a shop or two and you know I live in a small town soo that is about all there is without driving several hours.....and that guy said $1600...I didn't believe him...I thought that sounded like a total bottom end rebuild price....also something I forgot to put up there was price at a shop or price for me to buy the parts and do it myself....because I may have never rebuilt a motor on the bottom end but I can figure things out pretty quickly and my uncle could rebuilds motors so he could drive up from were he lives a couple of hours away...

depends on price of car. if you cant fix it yourself probably not worth it. you dont just replace the bearing. you check everything....crank, rod bearings, all main bearings. parts arent alot but you will have labor and labor kills the wallet

I would say a 1k or so because while it's down you want a new cam, valve job etc..really depends on if the crank is wasted and how bad the cyl. walls are..

agree with the old fart above ^^^^^^^ LOL
if it's got a main bearing failing, that means it's been driven really hard and there may well be more damage internally, so if you get it, plan on doing a full scale engine rebuild or else pass on it and keep looking for another one.

i just did the same thing with an 88 gt. i bought the car for 1900 and bought a 500 dollar junk yard motor with 80,000 on it. its worth it if you can sell it for what you have into it if you don't plan on keeping it for a while.

Well...yeah I would want to do a entire engine rebuild except he has already redone the whole topend on the car...keeping the stock gt-40 heads just port and polished them....kept the cobra intake..just cleaned and polished it...it has new valves and springs and all that jazz in the heads.....has a brand new E303 cam...70mm throttle body...30lb injectors.....shorty headers...off road x pipe exhaust...and all that....plus more has a superchip that comes with it but not installed....new ford racing clutch...and all that with with only 300 miles on it....and he said after he got done with all that the bearing started to make the noise....he is selling the car without the trade of my car for $4000...the only thing being wrong with it would be that bearing.....does that help anymore....and back to my original question...would it be worth it...because remember I have been long for well over a year for a decent mustang in my area.....with the 5.0 that I could use as a daily driver.......so I was looking for like a 94-95 for the better ride(in my opinion)....anyway thanks for all the help soo far...
