so many engine choices

hey guys, ive been doing research for about a month now on what to do with my 88 gt's motor. i want in the area of 400 hp at the flywheel. i have no preferance that it has to be a stroker or what not but i am on a tight budget. what is the best alternative to get the power at a good price while keeping the car fuel injected. should i do a simple rebuild and get a new set of heads and cam? ive thought of that however if you add up the machine work labor and the rebuild kit and the heads and cam it seems like it would be cheaper to buy a long block crate motor? im some what confusedon what to do and could use some suggestions. thanks for any help and ideas, john

the bigger the motor is, the easier it is to make power. starting with a 351 is a great way to get good power cheap, and mostly everything from you 5.0 will bolt up. plus the 351's have more meat to them, which means they can take more abuse. if nothing else, get a 331 forged kit, and some boost. h/c/i with a 331 wont hit 400 without some serious work.....from what ive heard at least, someone correct me if im wrong
