347 Oiling Problem
I have a 347 SBF that has developed an oil circulation problem. Out of the blue, there is no oil feeding the lifters on the passenger side of the block. Driver side is OK. Oil pressure is 45 to 60 lbs. No knocks (as in bearings on the lower end). I do not know the routing of the oil circuit to the right sideof the engine so I don't know exactly where to look. I don't know if I need to look at cam bearings or main bearings. ...supposing one of them has spun. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.[sm=boohoo.gif]Thanks, John
347 build details. Mehling high capacity oil pump and hardened pump drive shaft, standard 5 qt pan, main girdle, Probe crank, rods and forged pistons, PC rings, Clevite 77 bearings, Crand hydraulic roller with Crane retrofit roller lifters, Crane roller rockers, and Crane hardened pushrods. |

On the top rear of the lifter valley there is a freeze plug the size of a nickel (intake has to come off). This routes the oil from one side to the other. My guess is the freeze plug popped up and the oil is feeding the drivers side and then spewing into the lifter valley.
When you replace the plug with a new one, use a chisel to dimple the cast iron around the plug - this will keep that from happening again. http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/7...deburrefb7.jpg |

Well, no help. I pulled the intake off and much to my dismay the plug was in place. Wish it had been that easy. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

Do you know where I can get my hands on a diagram that shows the oiling circuit? I have seen them in the past but don't have anything these days that would show it. Thanks again.

make sure that your oil lifter gallery plugs in the timing chaing cover are plugged as well. I had the same problem in which i was getting no oil up to the heads, took off my timing cover and TADA no plugs! hope this helps!

Why do you have a 5qt pan with a high volume pump?

yeah the only other thing could be the plugs at the front or rear of the oil galley that feeds all the lifters. if it were the back one it would be spewing oil all over the ground (and they are threaded plugs IIRC), but it could definately be the front plug.
gives you a good excuse to replace your timing chain and front main seal if you havent done so recently ;) |

you need a 7qt for a high flow pump man. you arelooking for problems! check that plug in the front thats what happened to me. get a bigger oil pan or change the oil pump to the stock one. I have a 347 and i put the moroso 7qt on it with the high flow oil pump. I heard that 347 consume oil so i didnt want to take any chances running low and ruining my hard work.
