Default Camshaft....

After my next paycheck comes in, I will be getting a new camshaft. I was wondering what kind of camshaft would work best with my 83 5.0. It has all stock internals, Edelbrock carb and intake, some bbk shorty headers, flowmaster exhaust, no cats..... I have no clue what cam would be too big or not, and I was wondering what cam would work best with my car but still obtain driveability. Getting the car to 300hp is my goal as of now. Currently... 190hp.. Thank you and thanks for your time.

I would be surprised if that is even a better cam than your stock one. Get Something in the 220 duration and 480 lift range at least.

Im gessing you have a manual trany, you oughta get a F-cam or an E-cam if you got the auto. these cams work w/ carb engines, I dont know about the trick flow cams though. there is somecrane cams that are special for carb eng.. if you go w/ what you have in mind ^^^^^, you might as well light your cash on fire Imus

He is not roller, its flat tappet cams he is looking for, id say just grab any comp lunati or crane with at leastmy afformentioned specs because the flat tappets are all dirt cheap. If you want call up comp or crane and they will set you right.

you'd be surprized at how small the factory flat tappet cams are LOL. that summit cam would be ok, but this summit cam would be better:

i have used this cam before - it will melt the tires and pull strong right up to the 5k rpm range.

Gonna waste your money with a cam right now.. keep saving for heads. Better yet, save for gears. If you can set aside your ego, it'll make you feel like you've got 300.

LT your using later model roller cam thinking. why do you think people shoot for cam swaps before head swaps? because the factory flat tappet cams are very small, i remember seeing specs in the .3xx lift range. when you cam is that small, a larger cam will significantly boost your horsepower while still using stock heads
