Rear Tranny Seal
I drove to Raleigh yesterday in my Stang. 70 miles into the trip I get pulled because my car was smoking. When I get to Raleigh 60-70 miles later I crawl under the car to find my seal that I just put in last week has popped out and his dangling around the driveshaft. I bought another and found a Mexican tire shop LOBOS that was open late and they charged me $80 to install the seal. They made the mistake of putting gear oil in my tranny and I told them it needed ATF. I didn't trust that they drained completely and refilled so I did it again today. As I filled it I put three qts. in and was letting the fluid just overflow into the pan when I look back and I also have it leaking out of the seal where the driveshaft goes in which was replaced 120 miles ago. Is it normal for excess fluid to drain from that area? The mechanic yesterday said the driveshaft looked worn in that area is that possible maybe from driving with the seal gone?

RE: Rear Tranny Seal HELP
Can someone please tell me if it is normal for the tranny fluid to run out the rear seal when overfilled or do I need a new driveshaft yoke?

RE: Rear Tranny Seal HELP
could have messed the seal up when installing driveshaft, check the yoke to see if its worn, but they usually don't go bad
I'm pretty sure that sleedi-sleeves are available for the yoke... Sounds like you need one or you can pop the cash on a new one. Also, before you install the new seal (again) smear a little RTV around the outside of it. That should help it to seat (lubes it on the way in) and seal any imperfections on the tranny case.

Mine is and it only has the slightest of grooves... Not a huge leak, but a leak just the same.

I have a similar problem. mt t56 loves to leak, Before it was leaking slightly from the rear seal and the vss. I bought a new vss and installed it so now the rear seal is leaking even more. it leaves a small pool about 4 inches wide by about 1/8 inch high when I park it from rigourous driving.I really hope that its just the seal that went bad.
