Generally, the 89 through 92's are considered the best for adding engine modifications. The combination of stronger block, MAF, better heads and forged pistons (pre-'85's and the'93's had cast pistons) make these easier to modify and more reliable, plus they started with more power then the other years.

Ill go through 86-95 for the 5.0's. Here's the power comparisons:
86= 200hp and 9.2.1 c/r.
87=225hp and 9.2.1 c/r
88=same^^
89=same^^
90=same and 9.0.1 c/r
91=same^^
92=same^^
93=205hp and 9.0.1 c/r
94=215hp and 9.0.1 c/r
95=215hp and 9.0.1 c/r
86= 200hp and 9.2.1 c/r.
87=225hp and 9.2.1 c/r
88=same^^
89=same^^
90=same and 9.0.1 c/r
91=same^^
92=same^^
93=205hp and 9.0.1 c/r
94=215hp and 9.0.1 c/r

some peeps say go with the '89 model year as it has MAF and no airbag too! rest of those in the 90's have airbags.
