even if you torqued down the manifolds (or headers) it could still be leaking if it was the problem, could have very well blown the gasket out ya know.

but yeah, prolly a lifter

still got smog equipment?
the rubber hoses near the passenger side header can crack from heat, that will cause a tick.

He's got gt40p's so theres no smog ports to leak. More then likely its just a rocker that loosened up.

BTW I went to Crazy Rays thursday. I picked up real gt40 irons (not p's) and gt40 manifold.I couldn't get the other set of heads because that explorer was so crushed in the front.

Check out the headers first, look for black spots around the header bolts, and flanges where they mount to the block. If you see any black spots (exhaust residue)that might be your problem. Most likely its a lifter or two. A little labor time easy fix. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna pop the valve cover off tomorrow and take a gander.

Took off the valve cover, all rockers were sitting pretty at 20 ft lbs with the valves closed.

I'm thinking lifter now.

No it's not, lifters are okay 99% of the time, as mine were. I also didn't have the money for them at the time.

It wasn't dumb not to replace the lifters. Lifters do rarely go bad and can last 200k plus miles easily. No reason to replace them if they are still good. They can be swapped out in 2 hours if they do go bad, no big deal.

Also vig sounds like a header gasket to me, normally lifter are pretty noisy on deacceleration to. I'd try replacing the gasket. I have some gaskets if you need them, you don't even have to take all the bolts out, it slides down on the 2 outer bolts.
