Default big big big problem....

Ok I have a little problem here .... I blew my engine 2 weeks ago .... broken crankshaft .... I found out today that my block and 2 rods are broken too .....

I need to get another engine as soon as possible. ...

My neighbor has a rusted ford 1989 F150 with a 5.0 with only 88k on it and he would give it to me . I know these engines are little less powerful than the 5.0 HO .

Would it be possible to swam my heads and cam on it or these engines has flat top pistons? I know the HO has grooves for the valves on their pistons ..... would a F150 5.0L could have enough clearances with a HO cam with his stock piston?

Thanks!!

i think you would need a different crank too because if memory serves, the 5.0 and 5.0HO have different firing orders. i think the block is the only thing worth using on the motor he is going to give you.

his wont be a roller block, you can convert them i think, you have to drill your block and tap the holes for the keepers. not positive on that, but i know there is drilling required if you convert from non roller to roller

The crank has nothing to do with the firing order.

I know that the firing order will be changed with my camshaft .

I've checked very well and it says that after 1986 , every 5.0 (HO and non HO) were roller cam .

I want to take the block of the F-150 , swap my cam , heads and intake on it and run it . I know the pistons are differents (f 150 has flat top pistons)

The only things I am worried about is the clearances of the valves. I will run a non HO with a HO cam (it will give the firing order of a HO with this swap) but with differents pistons, I'm afraid to see pistons smashing my valves....

thanks

lol, you must not have checked well enough....after 86 all 5.0's were EFI, not carb'd.....i have a 1991 f-150 with a 5.0 and its non roller. my buddy has a 92, and its the roller camshaft...... just pull the valve covers off the motor and make sure u know what u have before you set all your plans.... oh, and to check the whole valve hitting thing, just manually turn the motor over, SLOWLY and if it locks up when one of your valves is fully extended then ya know its hitting......

cool thanks! I did'nt know that. I don't care about drilling a tapping 2 holes on the engine , but can I swap the cam or the bearing is a different size??

all the 5.0HO had in the way of a cam is a 351W marine engine cam in it. Thats it. The lift isn't so much that you'd be worried about PTV clearance. Checking is still a good idea though.

As far as switching a non-roller to a roller, its a bit more complicated then just drilling two holes.

You need to have the lifter boss's milled down to accomadate the dogbones which hold the lifters into place, then you have to drill the two holes in the center of the lifter valley to hold the spider down, then you may or may not, im not exspert, but you may have to get a small base circle cam to clear because i believe the non-rollar blocks didnt have as much room around the cam to clear the large, rounded lobes of the roller cams.

Why don't you just pick up a used, low-mileage 5.0HO motor from the paper, you can usually pick them up for around $400-$500 and you know what your working with, and they have forged pistons if you find a 87-92 motor. It would save alot of headaches down the road if you decide to modify the engine.
