I've heard they will suck a 4 or 5 quart pan dry. The high volume pump isn't really necessary unless ur running real loose tolerances or high revs. I run one with a 8 qt pan

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense putting an oil pump on a motor that doesn't need it especially a high volume cause all it's going to do is cost u hp. And none of us wanna give that up haha. I'm not sure how u would know if ur sucking it dry except for a pressure drop. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

a high pressure pump > a high volume pump

high pressure is not better, it's just got a stronger spring in the pressure relief mechanism in order to make increased pressure. High volume is better but only required if u run loose tolerances

I run a melling high volume oil pump with the stock 5qt pan, so far it's worked beautifully. Only thing for install is you have to switch one of the bolts on the bottom of the pump so it doesn't dent the pan.
