Knocking '69 5.0 302 V8
I am looking at a Mustang for sale, but I need some advice.

Any knocking from the bottom end suggests that the engine has probably done
a decent ammount of miles in its time and may be due a rebuild. I suspect
mine is the original engine fitted in '69 and has probably never been
rebuilt. It still starts easily and runs sweetly, and for the sort of
summer crusing I have been doing it for may have lasted for quite a long
time, but realistically if you want to put any ammount of miles on it cant
be ignored indefinately. This verdict came from my local garage. Not sure
what checks can be done to see how bad it is other than simply listening to
it? The knocking is a bit like a worn tappet noise only deeper (if that
makes any sense). It is present at all RPM when under load, warm or cold

it depends on how the rest of the car looks and what shape it is in in my opinion. if you really think the body and chassis is in good shape and only then engine needs work, then you might want to negotiate the price downward to account for the engine rebuild price you know it needs and then go from there. if you do get it, definitely get it rebuilt before the bearing spins or the rod breaks as this could trash the block making it useless for a rebuild.

i would lower the price, when you get it just rebuild it immediately.
take the motor out and send it to a good shop that does the whole deal, wash the block, bore it, square it etc...
thats what i would do, cheaper than buying a whole new engine.
