Default strange noise??

i have a ford 302 that i have been building and i have a trickflow top end kit, with a ford E cam. when the motor is running, there is a constant popping sound under the hood, almost sounding like popcorn being made. the noise does kinda sound like metal on metal. i have checked my timing many times, and have checked my valves a number of times, and i am pretty sure that they are not the problem. the popping noise does escalate when rpms are increased. i really have no clue on what this noise could be, i am stuck. please help!

thanks.

i am almost positive that timing isnt the issue, the noise started happening after a burnout. and it really doesnt sound like a "wrapping" noise like spun bearings make, i have plenty of oil pressure too.

How many miles on the motor? If it started happening after a burn out = high load, maybe the timing chain jumped and is causing your pininging. Have you noticed any other loss of performance?

the engine has very low mileage, and it does have a lack of performace to it. what do you mean by my timing chain jumped?

piston slap...that might be it, were ur pistons notched for valve clearance?

Factory timing sets are not real high quality, after a while the chain can strech and cause wear on the gears. This throws the timing off between the crank and cam. They can wear to the point that they can jump a tooth under high loads and throw your timing way off
