Default Auto Tranny problems

I havea '94 GT Vert - Automatic. I understand that's the AODE. Last night, the transmission began acting strange. It seems it couldn't decide what gear it wanted to be in, & kept jumping back & forth. Sometimes, it would even miss the gear & rev for a few seconds, then drop back into gear. I checked the fluid.......the levels are fine, and it doesn't smell burnt. Any suggestions?

Anything else that might be able to be done?

So far it's just stock. I will be jumping to 351, HCI, the whole deal. If I do replace the tranny, what should I get? Also, is it worth it to convert to manual (I know it's been asked a million times)?

I personally love automatics in drag cars, I've got an AOD. Find someone to rebuild it for cheap with the kevlar bands and such. It's going to need to be strengthened to be reliable with a 351 and H/C/I. Have you scanned it to see if it is a speed sensor or anything like that? That's what it sounds like to me.
