new block vs. getting old one machined

i figure its about 400-500 bucks to have machine shop do up the stock block... how much more would it be to buy a new one? better perhaps

Depends on what you want. I think you can buy a new FMS 5.0 block out of summit for about 500 plus freight.

at one time summit had 5.0 blocks for 300, not sure what they are now. I would definetley get a new one if it isnt much more

a used block is better, it has already been through many heat cycles and this makes the used block stronger.

go to http://www.fordracingparts.com/home/...Startanimation and check out the sportsman blocks they have on here in addition to stock blocks. what you finally get will depend on the ultimate plans you have for the engine and how much you want to spend for it. your used block has been "seasoned" that's true, but that doesn't make it the best choice depending on what you want to do as far as power level and reliability goes. if you're just doing a street based rebuild, your old block would probably be a good starting point but if you want lots more power, I would consider a different block.
