Default push rod guide plate problem

Got the engine all together, primed, and cranked her around with only coil wire on to get the oil goin. After it started it started making a noise from the driver side valve cover. It sounded like one off my new 1.6 roller rockers were hitting the valve cover. I also noticed that one of the #7 rockers wasn't wet on top. I pulled the rocker to clean the hole and noticed the push rod was nicked from rubbing on the guide plate, they are hardend rods.Is this normal or do the guide plated need to be adjusted. This is my first time using them so I not really sure, what do you guys think.

there should be wear marks on the pushrods after some use, but "nicks" are something else. guideplates can be moves a little but if you loosen the rocker arm studs, but basically if when the rocker arms are sitting on the studs/pushrods/valve tips everything lines up thats where the guideplates should be.

it can take a little bit to pump up lifters, so if one rocker isnt wet - put a little oil on it so its not running dry and let the motor run for a few minutes and see if it pumps up.

lastly, i dont know what kinda covers your using, but if your hitting the valve cover you make have to either remove a baffle, or use thicker gaskets.

Most guide plates if you have correctly matched your components center off of the rocker studs with a little room to plat with side to side. if throller tips on both the intake and exhaust vakve are centered your fine and the sides of the push rods will contact the guide plates and wear some of the black oxide coloring off but nothing exccessive.

I guess I will find out tommorow, I am gonna start her with the valve cover off. I'll cut some carboard to stop oil from slinging everywhere

I'm assuming you went with pedestal rockers and not rail type?
