Brakes

I've been snooping about the internet and have come seen a couple times now the fox bodied 'stangs have inadequate brakes. How true is this?

RE: Brakes

Alright. So I'll probably want to:

Change brake fluid.

Put on new brake lines.

Replace the front Ford pads with something better.

Replace the front calipers.

Repack the front wheel bearings.

Sound good? Any suggestions on the specifics. Like what brand of fluid(if there are brands, not sure), Brake lines, pads, calipers, or bearings? Just wanting some advice here :P. Also, is there anything else I should do? Is what I've suggested too much. Sorry for asking lots of questions, just this seems like the most important aspect of the car to me, you know, being able to stop.

weeeell... if you've got the money, you could upgrade to a five lug bolt pattern and bigger rotors/calipers and discs in the back. That would get you stopped. lol
50resto.com sells those kits. and i'm sure other sites do too. oh, there's a brake upgrade kit for 200 dollars or so. i think it has better pads and lines and other stuff. check 50resto. i'll see if i can find the link

ok. so take a look at that. it says that it will reduce the stopping distance to 98 ft. i don't know about that, but maximum motorsports makes good stuff.
i'm sure you could find it cheaper elsewhere though, imo.

Hmmm…thanks jonna! It's a bit much but I doubt i'll have much trouble persuading my parents to buy better brakes for my car! Playing the "don't you want me to be safe?" card :P. Huh, doesn't seem to ship to Canada…

RE: Brakes

yeah... i know. i can only dream about the cobra brake package now too. it is a lot of money.
but the other kit for $250 is an idea as to what you could do for now. if you're looking at the cheaper uprgrade kit, try maximummotorsports.com or whatever their website is. they might ship to canada. good luck though

RE: Brakes

Huzzah! Maximum motorsports ships to Canada and has the same brake upgrade package as late model restoration. Now I'm just pondering if I should just see if my local OKTire has brake upgrades in shop or if I need to order 'em.

I've never done anything mechanical to a car. I'm not gunna race the car, it's going to function more as a daily driver.

@ Jasperstang308: Wow, I feel dumb.

If money isn't a issue you could get a baer brake kit. Baer sells a kit that converts it to 5 lug, comes with 13" front rotors, 12" rear rotors, big cobra stylecalipers, baer proportioning valve, and steel braided brake lines. I got lucky when I bought my car it already had these brakes on it and they stop amazing. There's a couple picture of my brake's on my cardomain site

Price is going to be a bit of an issue unfortunately. Something $250 or under less is the approximate price range.

93_five_oh 07-23-2007 12:03 AM

RE: Brakes

well... you won't find any conversion kits for that, but that maximum motorsports kit looks pretty good. i was thinking about getting that. well i will when it's time for new pads. and i've never heard anything bad about MM. other than that i don't know of much else out there... i mean you could get new rotors too. that are cross drilled or slotted. i have cross drilled ones and can't complain. but they were on there when i got the car, so i don't know how the stock ones are

at that price you better learn to turn a wench and start scouring wreaking yards looking for one of the conversions listed in the tech section. Mine was all done under that price but I do 99% of my mods and have a good idea of what to look for even a few items people tried to tell me wouldn't work.
