ORIGINAL: FASTBLACK

I run 11:1 on my 351 block with 93 octane. You have a hydraulic roller with roller lifters.i have a solid flat tappet cam with mechanical lifters. Roller lifters are a lifter with a roller on the cam side that creates less friction, and in some cases will produce more hp. Your can go with a bigger cam but may have to fly cut pistons. My cam's lift is 588/622 , with the 1.7 roller rockers it raises the lift but not sure how much, duration is 246/259 @ .050. You cant go this big with a 302 unless you cut pistons. Pistons and heads will raise compression, it has to do with piston compr. that you buy and combuster chamber in your heads. Lower combustion chamber equals higher compression. There are many bolt ons and if you have good power suspension is a must. It is not cheap.
Isn't there solid roller and hydraulic roller? Are you required to run a certain one with a certain cam or is it preference and does either have an advantage over the other?

Yes, there is a solid roller and hydraulic roller. You have the hydraulic roller. With hydr. roller you use hydr. lifters. With solid roller you use solid lifters. The hydr. are less maintenance. With mine you have to adjust valve lash sometimes and you will have noise similar to a sewing machine. The hydr. lifters have rollers that roll on the cam therefore it will have less friction(always good). I beleive in early to mid 90's they made 351 with hydr. rollers all the others were solid. There is a kit to convert solid to hydr.

What cam would be a good cam to shoot for as much power out of this 5.0 as possible but still be somewhat streetable? I DD on the stage 1 cam no problem. Any suggestions?

Without headsi woudnt worry about a bigger cam, the one you have is bigger than stock. To get the full potential out of the 302 you need some nice heads. I would save to buy heads then get a cam.

yea I know, I'm talking about for when I get heads. What cam would be best to compliment a new set of heads?

That will depend on the heads you get.

Why would I switch from hydraulic roller to a solid roller? Is there a benefit to having a solid over a hydro? Sorry I know these are all pretty dumb questions, This will be my first motor project, so I'm still learnin.

solid roller is the cam racers use. For your build a conversion from hyd to solid would be pointless for 5-10 hp. Stick with hyd. the trick flow 1 cam is a good cam and with some good port work to the stock heads and a little suspension u will be 12's all day long.If you wish to go with another head than u need to say something. figure that out and than ask us again about the cam. oh and I have heard of 12 to1 comp on 93 octane and no detonation. John Kaase did it with a recent build. go to his website www.jonkaaseracing.com and look on his home page for the P-51 build. he ran 12 to 1 I believe on 93 or 94 and had no detonation.

I definately plan on running aftermarket heads. No idea what yet though. As for gas, highest we have is 92.
