RE: need help with auto tranny!
It will cost at least $1500 to get the AOD rebuilt with a shift kit installed. May as well spend another $300 for a good converter.
A new T-5 is around $1300. Then the cost of clutch, bellhousing and related components. And labor.
I did a 4R70W swap to my car. Got a good used tranny from a wrecked 96 T Bird, installed a Baumann shift kit and TCS system. Works great. This set me back just over $1100 and some serious time under the car.

RE: need help with auto tranny!
aods aren't good by any standard of performance, they are heavier than most trannies, geared horribly (2.40 1st) and starve to death to shift smooth
yes they can be fixed, but you'll waste your money, if you get the car drive it till you kill it, then get a lentech trans
a decent converter alone for an aod is $500 (anythng less than that is junk GUARANTEED)
i spent my share of time on aods convincining myself they could run, too much coin for me, if you got deep pockets have at it
at minimum: 3000 stall, wide gear set, "a" servo, baumann kit, cooler
next on the list is a manual valve body
THE biggest problem is the lack of 3rd gear by itself on the shifter......you have 1,D,OD
"d" is 2nd and 3rd, so it waaaaay short shifts on it's own, if you do the "aod shuffle" you can hold it, but destroy your trans
the next worst link is the incredibly junky od band, it starts to slip at about 40k miles if your lucky , starts to contaminate the oil, which ruins everything else.
i say 5-speed swap, check http://www.ddperformance.com you can get "Z" spec t5's for $999 i think if you watch
that or c4 but you lose od
