Yea align honing your right, but I had the guy show me what he meant by not interchangeable. The cap sits in notches in the block and also the sides of the cap and the block where the bearing lip sits on the sides wont line up either, so the only problem is the 3 different things must lign up EXACTLY, and that doesnt happen and you cant machine more off the block to make1 side of the cap fit square, then the other side won't fit right and so on, yes you can get the borefor the crankto be square but the side to side an front to back fitment are off on the cap to block fit.. He showed me with 5 other 302 sitting at the shop and we took turns taking off caps and seeing ifit would work on any other, they would not, not one. It is possible but the chances are about 1 in 500 might workbut the block you take 1 from would then be no good, so the answer is to just buy another block and junk the old. Strange but I had 3 different professionals tell me the same thing, so go figure, learned something new.

My guess is to first find what caused the failure then who would be responsible, the part, the person........hard to say without all the info you have that we don't. but I say if you find the guys at fault, don't bother with an arguement, take him to small claims and your money, just mwke sure you can point the finger with absolute certainty, and good luck to you, I hate guys who do crap work but don't stand behind it.

Dunno where you live but it may just be the easy way out is to find another block.
In my area an empty block as a core is about a $100 item......

Well, it's been a little while now and I've got the 331 back together and I've passed the 500 mile break-in with not a hint of trouble. You might be asking, what did you do differently this time??? Nothing.I bought a new crank and bearings, then had them installed. Here's what I think happened. This guy who assembled this thing has a little bit of a drinking issue which may or may not have come into play as he may very well have been trashed or maybe just buzzing as he assembled this thing. Either way I hope we all learned a valuable lesson. Don't drink and work on your motor...

when i put together my 331 with the eagle crank and i beam rods i thought i would be ok.
i had the shop order the stroker kit, bearing and rings came with it, pistons, the whole nine yards.
i had my old auto teacher come over and help for a little while and he said we checked the main bearing clearances and they were good. well 650 miles later my bearings are shot, real bad. the crank was rubbing against two different main caps, and one was the one with the thrust bearing, ate it alive and ate the side of the crank real bad and wore into the main cap. then after having my aode rebuilt, 400 miles later its toast. the tq. converter got so hot the back side of the studs, it left a ring of burnt paint. the front of the converter had a couple weld spots, it dug into the front of the tranny pump, and of course the tranny pump is toast.
so yea, i know what ur going through. im going to have some other people look the motor over and prob the tranny (if he doesnt warrenty it) and see if the crank and flywheel is correct since the machine shop ordered both for me.
