Most of the time thermostats fail open or fail closed. The symptoms you describe does not seem like a bad thermostat.

You may have air in the system or a clogged radiator.

just going off of what i heard from a mustang mechanic in springfield, va, the gauge is a cheaper place to start, so that's where i'll start with mine. summit racing has an electric tempgauge for about $140 that should work. i actually didn't put the stat in. i just bought the car last thursday and only drove it an hour from picking it up to my place. . . just going off of what the seller told me [new 165 degree stat].
