well it has often been rumored that the gm 305 was actually a little underrated mainly on torque. the long stroke and small bore was actually the grounds for more of a truck engine, in thus you would have way more torque then hp. so your 302 might actually not have that much torque over it.

If you can't chirp going into second, you arn't shifting hard enough......bring it over and let me drive...I will show you what you can do I bet I can get rubber in third too.

I know exactly what you are talking about 86GT.

Not all cars are created equal and you are expecting a 14 sec Mustang to "exhibit" more drama than a 16 sec Firebird.

Too many other factors and they mostly favour the Firebird in the show off department.

Those GM automatic transmission have a solid shift. Even some regular GM trucks will chirp 2nd. They have a deep 1st gear also so the rpm drop into second is big. This means something must give. RPM has to sharply fall down OR trans has to slip OR tires must speed up. In the case of the Firebird, the tires speed up, hence your chirp into 2nd.

Suspension design is another overlooked factor. Some cars "load" the tires as you apply torque, some "unload".
Ever watch a Mopar musclecar launch? The body usually rises about 2" but what is really happening is the tires are going down 4". Major traction. Cars like late early 80's GM, Monte carlo, Gran Prix etc. They unload the drive tires when you apply torque, that's why those cars will endlessly lay down rubber, even with only 200hp.

Lastly, your Mustang probably is due for a clutch. My 93 is pretty stock with a strong clutch. I have enough traction with 235 Dunlop radials to run a mid 13 but at the same time it will often chirp 2nd and sometimes 3rd.

There was three of us in a 91-92 firebird witha 305 tbi and 5 speed, we tached the motor out and did a clutch drop, and the car just bogged. It wasn't our car though . The car felt fast but then when we were racing it in out trucks at the time, both a 91 gmc sierra and a 86 F150 both pulled on it hard.

yeah i think my clutch may have seen too much abuse lately but that firebird amazes me cus its sure not as fast but man it will put u back in second, the mustang will too if u run it hard as u can, but second never chirps so i think im due for a clutch and prolly a rebuild sooner than later. the thing rips in second i love second gear on the stang just rip azz gear to drop into at 30mph and put the hammer down

You said the stang has 3.08's.. Thats pretty hard to get 2nd to chirp if you have some fairly decent tires. After putting 3.55's in it made it easier for me, but its still not really easy to do.

i had a 93 5.0(until a tree rearended me a month ago) but when i first got it it was bone stock with 3.08 and at the track it would run 14.6 at 98 mph and i would get a 2nd and even sometimes if i was powershiftin a 3rd gear chirp, but now my 89 i got a month ago second gear gets sideways ifs its any kinda wet third is pretty hairy too oh it has 3.73s in it. you shouldnt have a prob getting it to chirp the tires in second.
