RE: easy dumb ?
sorry guys, your wrong. without a t-stat the car would be more likely to overheat because the tstat slows the flow of coolant down. without any restrictions to flow the water passes through the radiator too fast and does not have time to cool off. radiator is a air to liquid heat exchanger.

when the coolant comes into the hot motor the thermastat also adjusts and closes. if the coolant did not remain in the radiator long enough to cool off you would defeat the purpose of the radiator. for instance without a t-stat you would be circulating hot coolant into the heads and block that are continuosly becoming hotter and your coolant can not absorb all the heat and boil. just passing through the radiator is not enough it has move at a certain speed to cool off, that is the t-stats job.

Sorry reddog, I think you are wrong. In racing engines, they do not run t-stats, as that is just one more thing to go wrong. Instead they use large washers to fill the hole where the stat would be, with different size holes in them which allows the water to come up to temp quicker. Running without one will not allow the motor to come up to temp to even worry about spending enough time in the rad to loose its heat load. Try it one time! been there and done that.
