'89 has just developed weird clunky sound from front end
My front suspension seems to have suffered something, I'm worrying it's actually the spindle. The symptoms are really weird though. When the car has been driven at highway speeds, a clunk develops in the steering, which is heard and felt when the wheel is turned to the right and back to center. If I steer back and forth it goes clunk-clunk. When I'm driving forward slowly, like in traffic or in a parking lot, and I come to a stop, it goes clunk too, and I feel it. But when the car is driven slowly for a while, or left to sit, it stops clunking, and won't do it again until the car has been driven at speed for a little while. The car's handling doesn't seem to have changed, and it doesn't seem to be in the steering, but I'm not sure. You can feel the car move when it clunks. I'm going to jack up the front end and wiggle the wheels and see what the spindles feel like. It seems like it's coming from the right side. What I don't understand is that it starts when the car has been driven fast, but goes away and doesn't start when it's driven slowly. maybe it could be something with the steering pump, though it doesn't quite feel like it. The steering did become a little heavier recently when idling, like the pump wasn't powering the steering as much when I drove in parking lots. Could it be related? I guess I'll add power steering fluid and see what it does. If it's full, then what could be wrong with the steering?
