The early Explorers with the regular GT40s has lower compression ratios than the 5.0 Cobras did, accounting for some of the power loss. That's why when people get regular GT40s off of an Explorer they're almost always milled. The cams are meant for low end grunt too. The GT40Ps saw a slight compression increase in the Explorers which resulted in the higher horsepower ratings of the 1997+ ones. I don't know all of the details but that should be the gist of it.

Basically because if you took a hunk of dog sh*t and put in on top of your stock 5.0 bottom end, you'd probably gain about 30+ rwhp over the E7's. Thats why.

as far as heads go... put TFS stage III ported heads on your car and its not going to make that much more power. the real power comes when everything is put together ie cam, intake, and heads. dont buy things based on HP gain rating. most of the time thats bullshiznit. example- when i put my e303 in my car i gained 55HP to the wheels!! now many people know that a e303 does not boost HP 55rwhp but that is what many companies will compare there product to. they will take a modded car and leave the stock air intake. then swap the intakes and say, "our intake makes upto 20hp" the car they tested it on was a built 302.

fords sales pitch could be (based on my info) " the e303 cam is capable of making 55rwhp above stock" its because i had ALL the supporting mods to make power BUT i had a aftermarket LOW LIFT cam already in there from a previous cam swap.

look at my sig........... before my e303 i put down 210 to the wheels.... yep, with all the bolt ons and the gt40 iron heads i made less power than a STOCK rung out pos five oh. i then put a cam in there and all of a sudden BOOM, power!!! 55 ponies

i may have read it wrong but is sounds like you (original poster) are unclear on the differences between IRON gt40s and aluminum gt40s. the aluminum has more power capabilities in stock vs stock form.
