Default keeps catching fire

Ok i we finished puttin in the 302 in my fathers mustang, and once we start to crank it, it soundslike its going to crank and then bam,the carbruetor catche on fire.... I dont have an aircleaner or any paper element on it... it catches fire towards the inside-middle of the carb....

when the engine was out of the car... we took the number 1 cylinder
and put it at TDC and then put in the distributor..... 0

so idk if the timming messed up or what.... do you think its has to much fuel, or too less???

timing is off. you are firing spark with the intake valve open.

Was the piston at TDC compression or exhaust? Your timing may be out 180deg

just lift the distributor a bit, turn the rotor exactly 180 around, and stick it back in.
obviously, you should know that it turns even more when you mesh the gear with the cam. make the appropriate adjustments for that, and you'll be all set.
