The only tool you really wanna have would be a dial indicator, to make sure when you put the carrier back in the the ring/pinion backlash is correct. And an impact gun helps too, makes it go easier. but yeah, it's a pretty simple little setup, I like it. And it doesn't require any friction modifiers, just plain ol gear oil, or synthetic if you like
On an 8.8 you have to pull the carrier to install a powertrax? On everything else I've ever seen (and my D-35) you do it with the carrier in the housing. That's why they're so simple. Just slide the axels out, remove cross-shaft and spider gears, and put the locker in.

I was thinking about my 8", the carrier completely encloses everything inside of it, you have to take it out and actually remove the ring gear and pull the carrier open to get at the inside. Even then, it's not that difficult. I guess it'd be even easier in an 8.8"? I'm not sure exactly how they're set up

well ill see how it goes. im pretty set on the true trac at this moment. my mechanic said that he would do it for 250. im NOT a big fan on having the work done by someone else, not because of money, but because i like to say i did it. however, i dont just simply dont have the time and it needs to be done.

thanks for all the good info guys.
