Default Replacing Harmonic Balancer

Does anyone have any tips/tricks to replace the harmonic balancer in an 87 GT? I don't want to just jump in and find out I need this and that.

I got these two parts:

Thanks for the help! [/align]

Pretty clear cut. Remove the belt, remove the 4 pulley bolts, remove the crank bolt. You'll need a puller to get it off though. Reverse re-install.

There are a couple of tricks for removing the balancer bolt. One is leaving the crank bolt on and the other is putting a breaker bar on it and then cranking hte engine to break it loose. Ive not done this but others have. I just left the belt on. Other than that it is straight forward. You might also want to get a front main seal. The pulley is only necessary if it is damaged.

The problem is that the crankshaft pulley snaped off and left some of the bolts in there with no top - :\

Any Ideas!

REPLACE THE FRONT SEAL!!

I did my HCI...had a brand new seal in it. 2 weeks later my balancer broke. I though the seal is only 2 weeks old...it shouldn't leak...WRONG! Drips of oil where everywhere [:@]

Needless to say, I had to go in there again and replace the seal. It is only $10 at Napa....do it right the first time

Also...Throw some locktite (red) on the balancer bolt and torque it to 70-90lbs (as per Haynes Manual)

Go to autozone and rent a "Harmonic Balancer Puller"

I ended up keeping mine, it was only $15...and I needed it too. I pulled it 3 times in a matter of 2 weeks

what i did

remove belt
remove fan and shroud
remove crank pully
put impact gun on the bolt holdin the balancer on, breaker bar would just turn everything... even in 5th gear, parking break up, and rear wheels on ground... just turned at the clutch for me
use the puller and it comes right off
15 min job

Mine would have taken 15 minutes if it wasn't for the 4 bolts that hold the crank pulley to the balancer being so close to the wall of the pulley...

I have Mac Underdrive pulleys, and the bolts are so close to the wall that I could not get a socket around it. I ended up having to use a crows foot with an extention....what a pain in the *ss it was [:@]

sounds like someone installed an underdrive crank pulley and used the stock bolts
